Methods & surfaces
What is soft washing and why does it matter?
Low-pressure biocide application that kills algae, lichen and moss at the root. Pressure alone removes the visible growth but leaves the roots, so regrowth is fast. Soft washing is the correct method for render, roofs and cladding.
Will high pressure damage my render?
Yes. High pressure strips the coloured face off render, forces water behind the surface and can cause lasting damage. Render should only ever be soft washed.
Can a mossy roof be cleaned safely?
Yes: moss is scraped and the tiles treated with biocide at low pressure. High-pressure washing of roof tiles strips their protective granules and shortens their life.
What are the red streaks on my render?
Red algae, very common on newer k-render across the Wynyard and Ingleby Barwick estates. It responds well to soft washing, sometimes needing a second application on established staining.
